Valerie

Am 15.5. haben wir "Valerie" gesehen, einen deutschen Film, ein Debüt, in Berlin spielend, und - allen hat´s gefallen. Da waren die Gastgeberin Miriam, Tish, Andreas, Stefan und netterweise auch mal wieder Stephan.

Although we already seem to know that the fashion model life is not as glamourous as it is glossed up to be, it was still a little more eye-opening to get a personal insight on behalf of Valerie. In the German, or European, or Indie film style, it was pretty dry and stark. She acted her part well, and the script didn't try to overanalyze, emotionalize, or even show too much depth into the story or the character. We seemed to have learned what she/they wanted for us to know about her in subtle ways: she worried, got angry, got sad, got scared, found humor in uncomfortable situations, cheated and lied as if she had had experience with it...then forged on. That that there was a little love but not great lovescenes was a nice touch in showing a tough girl inside a waif of a woman. That it is winter, that it is christmas time also plays in well to add to this depressingly interesting story. Not a lot of room or need for a lot of characters or character building. I can't say much about the filming or of the director since I don't know much about that like what they did or special looks or film methods. There was not a lot of music nor was there a memorable soundtrack.

Right, it's not "War and Peace", but for some reason, it held my attention and kept my curiosity for the end. Even though I know films like that don't wrap an ending up in a pretty little package, and it ended like I expected: an interesting little portrait of Berlin, a fashion model's strange little world, and we never find out why she left Paris, with no money, but sleeping in a Jaguar? Maybe a prequel about Paris and her trip to Berlin.

(I guess a practical person would have sold the car to get an apartment. But then there wouldn't have been a film.)

Frau Buzek hat gut gespielt, wie immer gut auch Devid Striesow. Gute Kamera, schöner Rhytmus, erstaunlich gute Dialogzeilen. Stefan meinte, die Musik sei arg konventionell eingesetzt, das erinnere ihn an Fernsehfilme. Fand ich nicht.

Der Film war im Kino völlig untergegangen, es gab ein paar kleine Rezensionen im Feuilleton, dann wurde er in diesem Jahre still und spät im Fernsehen versendet. Wer weiß, vielleicht gibt es mehr gute deutsche Filme, als wir glauben, sind aber alle gut versteckt. Mal sehen, ob Birgit Möller nochmal das Geld zusammenkriegt, um einen Film zu machen.
